Roads and climbs
The roads leading out of Karon are winding, with several steep bends — ride them slowly, especially the first couple of days. From Kata Beach it’s 5 minutes uphill to Karon Viewpoint.
Traffic keeps left. It feels odd for the first half hour — here is how to get used to it.
Parking by the beach
Scooter parking is usually free. Never leave it by a red-and-white kerb — that’s a 500 ฿ fine or a tow. Wear the helmet every time, even for a 3-minute ride: no helmet costs 500–1,000 ฿ for the rider and the passenger.
Fuel
Gasohol 95, around 43 ฿ a litre. PTT stations are all over the island; bottled fuel at roadside stalls is for emergencies only. More in fuel in Phuket.
Where to ride from Karon
Karon Viewpoint — three bays in one shot; Promthep Cape at sunset and Big Buddha — all three are 15–20 minutes apart; Promthep is about 30 minutes south of Karon, past Kata and Nai Harn. A ready-made loop: southern Phuket in one day.
