Which fuel goes in a rental bike?

Gasohol is bioethanol-blended fuel, Thailand's standard petrol. Modern fuel-injected scooters are built for it from the factory — no special prep needed. All 12 models in our bike catalog run fine on Gasohol 95 for the entire rental.
What not to do: fill with diesel or 'boost' the fuel with additives. MC BIKE scooters get serviced every 3,000 km, so the engine runs fine without any experiments. At the pump, your only job is to point at the green nozzle.
Where to fuel up: PTT, Shell, Bangchak, Caltex
Chain stations only: PTT, Shell, Bangchak, Caltex. They line every main road, and prices are about the same everywhere — around 43 ฿ a liter. Don't hunt for a baht cheaper — on a scooter tank the difference is pocket change.
PTT is the most common chain: many stations have a mini-mart and coffee shop, so you can fuel up and take a break at once. Our guests usually navigate by PTT signs — they're easy to spot from a distance.
Larger stations have restrooms and water, so Phuket's gas stations double as roadside mini-hubs. Planning a long ride? Just note stations along the way — no need to stock up. The island is compact, and you won't run dry if you glance at the gauge now and then.
How fueling works: just say 'ninety-five, full'
Phuket stations are almost always full-service: you pull up, and staff fill the tank for you. Just name the fuel and amount. The go-to phrase: 'gasohol ninety-five, full' — that's all it takes. Say it however you can — you'll be understood.
Self-service is rare on the island, but the routine's the same: green nozzle, Gasohol 95, pay at the counter. Your first fill-up feels like a tiny quest — by the third, the whole thing takes a couple of minutes.
The steps at the pump are simple and the same at any chain:
- Pull up to the pump, kill the engine, and open the fuel cap — on scooters it's usually under or in front of the seat.
- Tell the attendant: 'ninety-five, full' — a full tank of Gasohol 95.
- Want a fixed amount instead? Just say it — '100 baht' — or hand over a banknote.
- Pay in cash — small notes are faster; larger stations also take cards.
- Check the cap is closed and glance at the fuel gauge — the needle should move.
Roadside bottled gas: when is it okay?
Only as a last resort — when you're out of fuel and can't reach a station. Glass bottles on roadside racks are the local 'emergency stash': pricier than at the pump, with no guarantee on quality or how long it's been sitting there. These racks tend to appear far from the nearest station, banking on riders who didn't watch their gauge.
If you had to use bottled gas, top up with real Gasohol 95 at the next chain station as soon as you can. One such episode won't hurt the scooter, but don't run on bottles for your whole trip.
Easier to just avoid an empty tank: once the needle hits the bottom third, pull into a station. At about 43 ฿ a liter, riding on empty saves nothing and only adds risk.

For comparison: scooter rental itself starts at 300 ฿ a day, while a family on Grab easily spends 1,000–2,000 ฿ a day — one short local ride runs 150–300 ฿. A scooter plus gas almost always wins on cost.
Budget it this way: easy days near your beach run closer to 60 ฿, long cross-island days closer to 130 ฿. Even at the high end, a week of active riding costs less in fuel than one taxi-heavy family day.
The more efficient the model, the closer you stay to the low end: city 150–155cc scooters at 300 ฿ a day burn noticeably less than maxi-scooters. If budget matters most, start there.
Car rental: how the full-to-full policy works
