12 Places to Ride to on a Bike in Phuket: From Big Buddha to Samet Nangshe
From Patong or Chalong, you can reach any of Phuket's 12 must-see spots by bike in 5–60 minutes: from the 45-meter Big Buddha statue to the plane-spotting beach at Mai Khao. As a bonus, there's the Samet Nangshe viewpoint off the island, about an hour away. We've grouped every spot by zone with travel times so you can build your own route.
South Phuket: what's within half an hour of Chalong?
Five of the thirteen spots are in the south: Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, Promthep Cape, Freedom Beach, and Ton Ao Yon Waterfall. From Chalong, each is 10–25 minutes away; from Patong, up to 40–45. It's the richest zone for a first day on a bike.
The south works as one loop: temple in the morning, beach at midday, sunset at Promthep. Most guests start here — the roads are easy, with just one switchback, up to Big Buddha.
- **Big Buddha** — a 45-meter statue and the island's top viewpoint. Free entry; about 15 minutes from Chalong up a winding mountain road.
- **Wat Chalong** — Phuket's main temple, free entry. Under 10 minutes from Chalong junction, about 25 from Patong.
- **Promthep Cape** — the classic sunset spot, free. 20–25 minutes from Chalong; arrive an hour before sunset, parking fills up fast.
- **Freedom Beach** — an unspoiled beach just 5 minutes from Patong. Free entry, but the descent is steep: leave the bike up top and walk down.
- **Ton Ao Yon Waterfall** — a quiet spot on the Panwa peninsula, free. Fullest during the rainy season, May through October.
Central Phuket: where to go for history and entertainment?
The center has five more spots: the Old Town's Sino-Portuguese architecture, Chinpracha House, Central Phuket's aquarium, Andamanda water park, and the Carnival Magic evening show. From Patong to Phuket Town it's about 30 minutes by bike; from Chalong, about 20.
The Old Town is best seen on foot: colorful shophouses, cafés, street food. Park the bike and set aside 2–3 hours for the area. Chinpracha House charges admission — it's a lived-in house-museum from that same Sino-Portuguese era, usually with hardly any tourists.
Central Phuket and Andamanda water park sit next to each other, easy to combine: slides in the morning, the air-conditioned mall and aquarium after lunch (paid entry). Carnival Magic is an evening show, so you'll ride back in the dark: headlights and a helmet are mandatory — the no-helmet fine is 500–2,000 ฿ per person.
North: why go for the lotuses and plane-spotting?
The north has two spots: Ma Doo Bua café with its lotus pond, and Mai Khao plane-spotting beach by the airport. It's the far end of the island — budget about an hour each way from Patong, so it's smarter to give the north its own day.
Ma Doo Bua is free to enter — you only pay for coffee and breakfast, and photos on the bridge over the lotus pond come out postcard-perfect. At Mai Khao, planes land right overhead; the beach is free, so check the airport's arrivals board online beforehand.
The road north runs along a highway with a 90 km/h limit, dropping to 60 km/h through towns. A maxi-scooter is more comfortable for this stretch: a higher seating position and noticeably steadier handling at speed.
Samet Nangshe: how do you reach the bonus viewpoint?
Car only: Samet Nangshe is already on the mainland, about an hour's drive from Phuket, and your rental bike's contract keeps it on the island. The viewpoint overlooks Phang Nga Bay with its islands rising out of the water. Go at dawn — the bay in morning mist is arguably the best shot of the whole trip.

How do you plan the day, and how much will gas cost?
Gas runs 60–130 ฿ a day: with Gasohol 95 at about 43 ฿/liter, that's two or three fill-ups over a week of active riding. Fuel up at chain stations — PTT, Shell, Bangchak, Caltex; save roadside "bottled" gas for emergencies only.
Traffic in Phuket drives on the left; it takes 10–30 minutes to adjust — start with a short loop around your neighborhood, not the mountain switchback to Big Buddha. Police checkpoints usually run in the morning, 7:30–10:00, at major junctions: keep your helmet and Category A license with IDP on you.
Here's a sample first-day plan for the south:
- 7:00 — leave Chalong and ride up to Big Buddha before the heat and tour buses arrive.
- 10:00 — Wat Chalong, then coffee and a walk through Old Town.
- 14:00 — Freedom Beach: 5 minutes from Patong, swim till evening.
- 17:30 — Promthep Cape; grab your sunset spot early.
Which bike fits these routes?
A 150–160cc scooter covers the south and center just fine — Honda PCX 150, Yamaha NMAX 155, or Aerox 155 at 300 ฿/day. For the north and longer runs, take a maxi: Forza 350 at 600 ฿ or XMAX 300 at 650 ฿ — steadier on the highway and unfazed by the 90 km/h limit.
