150cc Scooter or 300+ Maxi: When the Upgrade Is Worth It

Riding solo around town, under 30 km a day? Get the PCX 160 ABS for 400 ฿/day. Riding two-up, planning long routes, or 180+ cm tall? The 200 ฿/day upgrade to the Forza 350 (600 ฿) pays off on your first cross-island ride. Below: an honest breakdown — seating, highway, fuel, and a 6,000 vs 3,000 ฿ deposit.

PCX 160 or Forza 350: quick take

City riding, solo, under 30 km a day — the PCX 160 ABS at 400 ฿/day is more than enough. Two-up, long routes, 180+ cm tall — the Forza 350 at 600 ฿/day, and that 200 ฿ upgrade will be your best decision of the trip.

At MC BIKE we rent out both models and have watched the same story play out for years. Couples who "saved" on a compact ask to swap for a maxi within two or three days. Solo riders who took a Forza "just in case" sometimes regret wrestling a heavy bike through Patong's narrow sois.

So the real question isn't "which is better" but "how will you ride." Let's break it down.

What does the maxi upgrade really cost?

The difference is 200 ฿/day: the PCX 160 ABS is 400 ฿, the Forza 350 is 600 ฿. Over the 5-day minimum that's 1,000 ฿; over two weeks, 2,800 ฿. Plus the deposit: 6,000 ฿ for the maxi versus 3,000 ฿ for the compact.

The deposit is refundable — returned the day you return the bike. So the real extra cost is just the daily difference, not "three thousand extra."

The gap shrinks the longer you rent. Rent 15+ days for −10%, 30+ days for −20%: the Forza 350 comes out to 480 ฿/day versus 320 ฿ for the PCX. Over a month, the maxi upgrade is 4,800 ฿ — about two or three days of family taxi rides, which easily run 1,000–2,000 ฿ a day in Phuket.

Pro tip
Rent 30+ days and the discounted Forza 350 costs 480 ฿/day — cheaper than a base-rate Forza 300 at 500 ฿. A long stay is the best time to move up to a maxi.

Forza 350 on the highway

At the highway limit of 90 km/h, the Forza 350 cruises with room to spare — overtaking is a quick twist of the throttle, not agonizing seconds at full gas. The PCX 160 holds 90 km/h too, but near the edge of comfort, especially with a passenger and bags.

The maxi's seating is roomier: a wide seat, plenty of legroom, a passenger seat that's a real bench, not a "shelf." For riders 180+ cm, this matters a lot — on a compact, a tall rider's knees hit the front panel.

Wind protection is the most underrated point. On a compact, the full airflow hits your chest and helmet, and it wears you down more than you'd expect on a long ride. Behind the Forza's tall windscreen, you just ride — and arrive fresh.

The trade-off is weight. A heavier maxi is more stable at speed and in crosswinds, but in dense city traffic and tight parking, the lighter PCX is noticeably easier to handle.

When is a 150–160cc scooter enough?

A compact is enough if you ride solo, mostly around town, under 30 km a day. For that scenario, the PCX 160 ABS at 400 ฿/day is the sweet spot: light, nimble, with ABS, and a deposit of just 3,000 ฿ (about $100).

Typical scenarios where a maxi upgrade adds nothing:

  • Trips around your area: beach, café, market, massage — all near the hotel.
  • One rider, no passenger, at most a light backpack.
  • Narrow streets and heavy traffic in Patong or Old Town, with frequent parking.
  • Budget matters more than comfort: saving 200 ฿/day is 1,400 ฿ a week.
Note
In rainy season (May–October), the road is slickest in the first 10 minutes of a downpour from the oil film, and ABS genuinely saves you. Among compacts, pick the 2024 ABS version, not the base PCX 160 at 350 ฿.

When is the 300+ maxi upgrade worth it?

A maxi makes sense in three cases: riding two-up, planning routes across the whole island and beyond, or being 180+ cm tall. In each one, that 200 ฿/day buys comfort you simply can't get on a compact.

In order of importance:

  1. Two-up. A passenger on the Forza 350 is comfortable for hours: wide seat, proper posture. Two-up on the PCX 160 is tolerable to the nearest beach, but not to the Samet Nangshe viewpoint — about an hour's ride away.
  2. Long routes. A loop around the island, sunrise at a viewpoint, sunset at Promthep Cape in one day — a pleasure on a maxi, an ordeal on a compact.
  3. Height and weight. A 180+ cm rider is cramped on a compact, and two adults aboard handle the highway worse too.
Tip
The maxi deposit is 6,000 ฿ (about $200) versus 3,000 ฿ for a compact. It's refundable and returned the day you hand the bike back, but budget for it upfront.

What about fuel consumption and small extras?

Budget 60–130 ฿ a day for fuel — both the PCX 160 and the Forza 350 fall in this range. A liter of Gasohol 95 costs about 43 ฿, so even the thirstier maxi adds tens of baht a day, not hundreds.

No point downgrading class to save on fuel: the daily rental gap dwarfs the gap at the pump anyway. Fill up at chain stations — PTT, Shell, Bangchak, Caltex — and leave roadside "bottle" fuel for emergencies.

For the unexpected: under the contract, a flat tire is the renter's cost, repairs run 100–200 ฿. Scheduled servicing every 3,000 km is already included, along with two helmets and a phone holder — details in the rental terms.

Which MC BIKE maxi to pick?

In the 300+ class we have four models: Forza 300 at 500 ฿, Forza 350 at 600 ฿, XMAX 300 at 650 ฿, and ADV 350 at 700 ฿/day. This article's hero is the Honda Forza 350: the price sweet spot and the most common choice for couples. If your scenario is more city-based, check out the Honda PCX 160 ABS.

The deposit for any maxi is 6,000 ฿, returned the day you hand the bike back. We don't hold your passport — a photo is enough. We video the bike's condition at pickup and return, so there are no disputes over "old scratches."
