Bike Deposit in Phuket: Why You Should Never Leave Your Passport

Why a passport deposit isn't “normal practice”
No Thai law requires a passport deposit — rentals invented that rule themselves. A fair scheme needs just two things: a passport photo or copy, and a refundable cash deposit of 3,000–6,000 ฿. Anything beyond that is just leverage over the customer.
The logic is simple: while they hold your passport, you're not going anywhere. You'll agree to any bill for a “scratch” and sign anything, because your flight is in days, and without your passport you can't leave the country.
There's a legal angle too: your passport belongs to the state, not to you. Handing it over as collateral isn't allowed, and a trustworthy rental knows this well — that's why they never ask.
What do you risk by leaving your passport?
There are four main scenarios, and none are theoretical: over 2,400+ rentals, travelers have come to us more than once after a bad experience with “passport” rentals. Here's what happens most often.
Loss is a story of its own. If the rental shop closes or your passport “goes missing,” you'll be dealing with the Russian Consulate in Phuket (+66 95 259 8081), a return certificate, and ruined plans. No 300–700 ฿-a-day bike rental is worth that.
- Blackmail at return: the rental “finds” a scratch and prices it far above real repair cost. No passport back until you pay.
- Your document is out of your hands: it sits in a desk drawer with strangers. A theft, a fire, a shop closing — and you're left without a passport.
- Travel troubles: you need your passport to check into a hotel, buy a SIM card, or pass any police document check.
- Time pressure at departure: if the dispute isn't settled by your flight, it's simple — pay whatever they ask or miss your plane.
What a fair scheme looks like: a cash deposit
Market standard is a refundable cash deposit: 3,000 ฿ (about $100) for 150–160cc scooters, and 6,000 ฿ (about $200) for maxi-scooters from 300cc. It's returned the day you drop off the bike — not “in a week,” not “after manager review.”
The deposit covers small rental risks. A flat tire, for example, is on the renter, costing 100–200 ฿ to fix. If the bike's intact, you get the full amount back at drop-off, no deductions, no fees.
Note: the deposit doesn't depend on rental length. Whether it's a minimum 5-day rental or a month at a 20% discount, the deposit stays the same — and must be returned in full.
The deposit amount and refund terms must be in the contract. No contract, no rental: verbal promises don't hold up in Phuket, and you'll have nothing to argue with later.

Rental wants your passport: what now?
Leave. Phuket has plenty of rentals running the deposit scheme, so you lose nothing: a normal booking commits you to nothing. The whole process takes five minutes.
If you've already handed over your passport: don't pay “whatever they ask” right away. Calmly demand a breakdown of actually damaged parts, and film everything on your phone — a camera keeps both sides honest.
The golden rule of any dispute in Thailand: stay calm. Raising your voice works against you here — polite persistence and pointing to a contract clause gets you far more than shouting.
- Calmly say you won't leave your original passport, and offer a cash deposit plus a photo of the document instead.
- If they insist — walk away. Sign nothing, leave no prepayment.
- At the next rental, check three things: a written contract, the deposit amount in it, and photo or video proof of the bike's condition at pickup.
- If a rental already holds your passport and won't return it, call tourist police at 1155 — they speak English and handle these disputes regularly.
How much to budget, and how to get it back with no disputes
Budget 3,000 ฿ for a 150–160cc scooter, and 6,000 ฿ for a maxi-scooter from 300cc. Cars carry a higher deposit: 5,000–10,000 ฿ depending on class. All these amounts are refundable and aren't a rental fee: for a scooter from 300 ฿/day, the deposit is simply “frozen” until drop-off.
For a dispute-free refund, document the bike's condition at pickup: photos and video from every side, including plastic panels, mirrors, and the dashboard. Note that the bike itself is usually uninsured in Thailand: damage is priced at the nearest shop's rate, only for parts actually affected — so that initial record decides everything.
