Riding a Scooter in Phuket's Rainy Season: 7 Rules

From May to October, Phuket gets a short tropical downpour almost daily. Roads are dry 90% of the time — but the first 10 minutes of rain turn road markings to ice. Here's how to brake, where not to ride, and why ABS matters.

When Is Rainy Season in Phuket

Phuket's rainy season runs May to October, peaking in September–October. A typical downpour lasts 20–40 minutes, and roads dry out within the hour. The asphalt is dry 90% of the time — rain isn't a reason to skip the bike, just a reason to know a few rules.

Pro Tip
Get the Windy app: its rain radar shows storm fronts 30–40 minutes out — enough time to get there or wait it out over coffee.

7 Rules for Riding in the Rain

  1. Wait out the first 10 minutes — rain lifts an oil film off the asphalt, making this the slickest moment.
  2. Cut your speed by 30%: if you rode 60, ride 40. Braking distance on wet roads grows 1.5–2×.
  3. Road markings and manhole covers turn to ice. Steer around white lines and metal, and never brake on them.
  4. Use both brakes, smoothly. Sharp front braking on wet roads means a fall.
  5. Double your following distance: keep 3–4 seconds behind the rider ahead.
  6. Steer around puddles — a hidden pothole underneath could be as deep as your wheel.
  7. Lights on, always. Every bike in our fleet has its headlight on by default.

Why ABS Matters in the Rain

Anti-lock brakes keep the wheel from locking under hard braking — a locked front wheel on wet road markings causes most beginner falls. The extra 50–100 ฿ a day for an ABS model pays for itself in peace of mind during rainy season.

Rain Gear and Equipment

A rain poncho costs 50–60 ฿ at any 7-Eleven — keep one under the seat. Closed-toe shoes are a must: wet flip-flops slide right off the footpeg. We provide a visored helmet for free — in the rain it shields your face from drops that hit like hail at speed.

If You Do Fall

Ambulance — 1669. Message us on WhatsApp right away: we'll point you to the nearest hospital and pick up the bike. You only pay for parts actually damaged, at workshop price list rates — that's spelled out in the rental terms. Rider insurance covers up to 30,000 ฿ with a category A license and an IDP.

Rain in Phuket is a short adventure, not a catastrophe. Follow the 7 rules, choose ABS during rainy season, and wet asphalt stays just a backdrop to your trip.
