What this place is and why people come

Ma Doo Bua is a garden café in Thalang, on the grounds of "The Legend of Thai Villas," built around an artificial pond of giant Victoria Amazonica water lilies. The leaves are so big and sturdy you can literally stand on one for a shot that looks like you're standing on water — the main reason it's all over Phuket's Instagram feed.

It's technically a working Thai restaurant, not an open-air museum: the 40–45 minute ride from Patong or Chalong gets you not just a photo spot but a full meal on a pier over the water. Open daily 9:00–21:00, there's no actual entry ticket.

What to see inside

Besides the pond itself, there's a wooden pier reaching out over the water, Thai-style huts with red tile roofs, and a prop boat for the classic "lying among the lotuses" shot. You can shoot photos from the pier yourself for free, just picking an angle between the leaves.

There are two paid photo formats: five to ten minutes standing on the biggest leaf (350 ฿, 60 kg weight limit) and drone shots (from 500 ฿ for one person, 800 ฿ for two, up to 1,200 ฿ for a group of four). You book a paid slot right at the entrance; in high season and on weekends the queue can run 20–40 minutes, though the session itself lasts only minutes.

How to get there by bike (and by car)

Ma Doo Bua sits inland near Bang Tao, so travel time depends heavily on where you start. From Patong and Karon it's about 40 minutes via Thalang, from Chalong 40–45 minutes via the bypass, while from Bang Tao, Surin, Laguna, and the airport it's just 15–20 minutes — practically on the way if you're already up north. The road is paved almost the whole way with no switchbacks; the only catch is traffic at the Thalang turns in the late afternoon.

A bike gets you there faster and more conveniently than a taxi or Grab: park right at the entrance, no waiting for a ride back. If you're a big family with strollers and bags, a car makes more sense — a compact sedan or minivan works well. Parking & entry

Opening hours are 9:00–21:00 daily, with the kitchen and bar on the same schedule. Entry is technically free, but it's really a restaurant: tables have a minimum order — usually one drink per person — the "deposit" you'll see mentioned in reviews. Leaf photos and drone shots are billed separately and don't count toward that order.

Parking is free and spacious, with separate spots for bikes and cars at the main entrance — you won't need to hunt for roadside space even on weekends.

Tips: when to go and what to bring

The best time is a weekday, the first hour after opening: calm water, soft light, and no queue for the pier. After 11:00 and on weekends, tour groups arrive and the free pier photo queue stretches to 20–40 minutes. It's 15–20 minutes from the airport and Mai Khao, so it pairs well with Airplane Beach and Andamanda water park in one day — all three are up north.
