Central Phuket and Aquaria: how to get there by bike, what to see

What it is and why visit

Central Phuket is two connected wings, Festival and Floresta, covering over 400,000 m² — the biggest mall on the island. Inside: hundreds of shops, a supermarket, a cinema, and — the main draw for tourists — the Aquaria aquarium on Floresta's basement level, the largest in Thailand, with 25,000+ animals and 300+ species.

The mall is open daily 10:30–22:00, free to enter. Aquarium tickets start at 1,290 ฿ per adult and 700 ฿ for kids 91–140 cm tall at the counter, cheaper if booked online ahead of time. It's one of the few places on the island where you can spend half a day in the AC — especially handy in the rain or peak heat.

What to see: mall and Aquaria

The Festival wing is mass-market: sportswear, electronics, shoes, and a food court with Thai and Asian dishes from 60–100 ฿ each. Floresta is the more upscale wing, with boutiques like Louis Vuitton and Gucci, kids' play areas, a Tops supermarket, and the AR Trick Eye optical illusion museum right next to the aquarium.

Aquaria itself has dozens of exhibits: a shark-and-ray tunnel, a tropical reef, jellyfish, and freshwater Mekong species. A relaxed visit takes 1–1.5 hours; with kids and the fish feeding show, closer to 2–2.5.

How to get there by bike or car

Central Phuket sits on Wichitsongkram Road, on the way into Phuket Town — easy to reach from any resort on the island. From Patong it's 25–30 minutes via Kathu and the bypass road (about 19 km), from Chalong 15–20 minutes on Route 4021 (10–12 km), from Kata and Karon 30–35 minutes. From the airport, about 35–40 minutes on Route 402 toward town.

The roads are paved all the way, with a few big junctions right by the mall — expect some traffic in the evening rush, 17:00–19:00. It's an easy ride for a bike, no hairpin turns, fine even for first-time scooter riders on the island; if you're still choosing a ride, check the full bike catalog on our site. Same logic for cars: no need for an SUV here, a compact automatic or family minivan like the Toyota Veloz will do — just budget 5–10 extra minutes for the drive down into underground parking.

Parking & entry

Mall parking is free for the first 3 hours, then 30 ฿ per hour, paid by card or cash on exit. Motorbike parking at both wing entrances is free with no time limit. Enter through Floresta if the aquarium's your goal — the Aquaria ticket counter is on level B1, right by that wing's main entrance.

Planning to stay longer than 3 hours? Keep your shop or café receipt — the info desk on floor 1–2 extends your parking for free once you hit a certain spend.

What to bring and when to go

The aquarium itself is chilly from the AC — a light layer helps, especially for kids. You'll do a lot of walking through the halls, so comfortable shoes are a must. Bring cash baht for parking after the third hour and for the food court — not every stall takes cards.

The best time is a weekday, the first hour after the 10:30 opening: by midday, lines form at the Aquaria counter and food court, especially on weekends and rainy days, when the whole island heads here.
