Khao Rang Viewpoint: what it is and why visit

Khao Rang (Rang Hill) is a hill about 140 m high right in the island's center, just above Phuket Town. At the top, a free viewpoint gives an almost 360° view: the city below, the docks, Chalong Bay, Cape Panwa, and hills to the horizon — all just 25 minutes from Patong and 20 from Chalong.

Entry and parking are free, the spot is open 24/7, and there are a few terrace cafés at the top where you can linger over the view for an hour or two. The road up is a paved switchback with no sharp turns, so it's great even for someone on a bike for the first time on the island.

What to see at the top

The viewpoint isn't just a photo spot — it's a small park where locals come for morning exercise and evening family time.

• 180–270° panorama: Phuket Town, the docks, Chalong Bay and Cape Panwa — stunning at sunset
• Terrace cafés over the cliff, the best-known being Tunk-Ka Cafe: Thai food and coffee with a view
• Wild macaques — they hang around in troops and will grab food or sunglasses left unattended
• Walking paths and exercise areas — a local tradition, not a tourist attraction
• On the way down the hill — Wat Khao Rang temple with a golden seated Buddha statue

How to get there by bike (and by car)

There's just one road up, from the southwest side of Phuket Town along Patiphat Rd. Search "Khao Rang Hill Viewpoint" or "Rang Hill" in your maps app. From Patong it's about 25 minutes: the bypass through Kathu, then through central Phuket Town and up.

From Chalong it's about 20 minutes through downtown, from Kata and Karon 30–35 minutes. If you're already in Old Town, it's just 10 minutes away: the road winds but has no steep switchbacks or dirt sections.

A light automatic bike suits this road well — see the full bike catalog, and for Khao Rang we usually recommend something like the Yamaha NMAX 155. Driving up is just as easy, but on weekends turning around at the top café can be tight — better to park a bit lower on the shoulder and walk the last 50–100 m.

Parking & entry

Entry to the viewpoint is free and open 24/7 — no gate, no tickets. Parking is free too, right at the top of the hill by the souvenir stalls and cafés, with enough space even on high-season evenings.

You'll only pay if you sit down at a café — Tunk-Ka Cafe, Khao Rang Breeze, or Phuket View. Thai food with a sunset view runs 150–300 baht per person on average; cards aren't accepted everywhere, so bring some cash.

Tips: when to go and what to bring

The most beautiful time is sunset, around 17:00–18:30: the sun sets behind the hills and city lights come on below. By 18:00 the best tables at Tunk-Ka are already taken, so arrive early to grab one. For an empty spot and soft photo light, come in the morning before 9:00, before the tour buses arrive.
