Phuket with kids by car: seats, routes, and parking

Do you need a car seat in Phuket?
Yes: Thai law requires kids under 6 to ride in a car seat or booster. At MC BIKE, the seat or booster is free for the whole rental — just tell us your child's age and weight when booking, and we'll fit it before you pick up the car.
Adding a second driver to the contract is also free, so parents can swap behind the wheel on long drives. We record the car's condition on video at pickup and return — no arguments about scratches. Full details are in the rental terms.
A special plus for families: we never hold your passport as a deposit. A passport photo and a refundable cash deposit are enough — your documents stay with you the whole trip.
Grab or rental car: which suits families?
For a family, renting is almost always cheaper: a family of four easily spends 1,000–2,000 ฿ a day on Grab, and one airport-to-Patong ride costs 800–1,000 ฿. A Toyota Yaris Ativ rents from 1,100 ฿/day, already with insurance, a free car seat, and unlimited mileage on the island.
But the real argument isn't even money. Taxis rarely have a car seat, and flagging one down with a stroller, beach bag, and a tired kid is no fun. With your own car, you leave when it suits your kids, not the driver.
Minimum rental is 3 days; 7+ days gets a 5% discount, 30+ days gets 15%. All six cars with prices are in the car catalog.
Where to go with kids: 5 top spots
The 3-day minimum rental fits perfectly with Phuket's five top kid spots: the water park, the aquarium, the lotus café, the plane-spotting beach, and an evening show. Our clients with kids usually build their whole itinerary around this list.
- **Andamanda** — a huge water park; set aside a full day. Arrive at opening: there's almost no line for slides in the morning.
- **Aquarium at Central Phuket** — a lifesaver in heat or rain: air conditioning, tanks, and a food court and shops nearby. Mall parking is free.
- **Ma Doo Bua** — a café with a pond of giant lotus leaves: photos on huge leaves for the kids, a lovely breakfast for the adults.
- **Mai Khao Plane-Spotting Beach** — jets land right over your head. Check the arrivals board so you're not waiting for nothing.
- **Carnival Magic** — an evening show park. Save it for last: kids fall asleep in their seats on the way back.
Where to park at malls and beaches?
Parking at major malls, including Central Phuket, is free — malls make a great "base" for the day: restrooms, food, and AC just steps from the car. That's why we suggest families combine the aquarium with lunch and a supermarket run.
At popular beaches, look for designated lots near the entrance. A few rules that save money and nerves:
- Don't park at a red-and-white curb — it's a no-parking zone: ~500 ฿ fine, risk of towing.
- Leaving the car all day? Choose shade: the cabin gets scorching in the sun, and the car seat even more so.
- Don't leave bags or a stroller in plain sight — as at any resort, it's safer stashed in the trunk.
Which car should a family choose?
A family with one or two kids will do fine with a Toyota Yaris Ativ at 1,100 ฿ or a Honda City at 1,300 ฿/day. If there are six of you, or grandparents are along, take the 7-seat Toyota Veloz at 1,800 ฿ — room enough for suitcases and a stroller too.
Every car includes full class-1 insurance, with a deductible from 3,000 ฿ depending on the model. The deposit is 5,000–10,000 ฿ by car class. Drivers need a category B licence with an IDP, be 21+, with 1+ year of experience.
Fuel works on a fair "full-to-full" basis: you get the car with a full tank and return it full, no hidden fees.
Driving with kids in Phuket: what to know?
Traffic in Thailand drives on the left, but it takes just 10–30 minutes to adjust — easier than it sounds with an automatic and GPS. Speed limits are 60 km/h in town and 90 km/h on highways; with kids aboard, there's no rush, and Phuket's roads are good.
The rainy season runs May to October, but downpours usually last 20–40 minutes, and roads dry within an hour. Keep a "rain" backup: the aquarium, a mall, or lunch — then continue your route. Save emergency numbers in advance: ambulance 1669, tourist police 1155, English spoken.
Fill up with Gasohol 95 (green pump), about 43 ฿/litre at chain stations: PTT, Shell, Bangchak, Caltex. Stations are all over the island, and lines are rare.
