A week on Grab costs a family in Phuket 8,600–16,000 ฿, while renting a Toyota Yaris Ativ for the same 7 days runs about 10,000 ฿ with fuel and delivery included. Ride more than twice a day, and a car is almost always cheaper — and far less stressful with kids. Here's the honest breakdown.

Short answer: what's cheaper for a week?

If your family makes 3–4 trips a day, rental wins: Grab can eat up to 16,000 ฿ a week, while a Toyota Yaris Ativ with fuel and delivery runs about 10,000 ฿. At 1–2 short trips a day, Grab is cheaper — 3,700–6,200 ฿ for the same week.

The break-even point is roughly two trips a day. Beyond that, every taxi call adds 150–300 ฿ to your bill, while a rented car's cost stays flat no matter how much you drive. Let's break down both options with real numbers.

How much a family spends on Grab in 7 days

8,600–16,000 ฿ is the real range for a family staying around Patong and riding often. Our clients who first tried living on taxis quote the same figures. Here's how the total adds up:

Airport → Patong transfer: 800–1,000 ฿, plus the same back at the end of the trip — 1,600–2,000 ฿ total.
A short trip around the area costs 150–300 ฿. A family with kids easily racks up 2–4 of these a day: beach, lunch, market, dinner.
That's 1,000–2,000 ฿ a day, or 7,000–14,000 ฿ over 7 days.

This covers short trips only. Longer runs — Big Buddha, Promthep Cape, the Samet Nangshe viewpoint an hour away — don't fit the "150–300 ฿ per ride" logic and are counted separately.

What a Yaris Ativ costs for a week

7,315 ฿ for 7 days: the base rate for Toyota Yaris Ativ is 1,100 ฿/day, with a 5% discount from 7 days. Add fuel and delivery, and you land around 10,000 ฿ a week with unlimited trips.

Gasohol 95 fuel costs about 43 ฿ per liter. Even budgeting a generous 50 liters for a week of active island driving, that's 2,150 ฿. Delivery straight to the airport is 500 ฿ — we'll meet you with a sign. Fuel works full-to-full: return the tank as full as you got it.

Important

For a car you need a category "B" license plus an International Driving Permit, age 21+, and 1+ year of driving experience. Without an IDP, insurers won't pay out — even travel insurance can refuse. In Russia, the IDP is issued via Gosuslugi and the traffic police, with a 1,600 ₽ fee.

When Grab really is cheaper

At 1–2 trips a day, Grab beats rental: 300–600 ฿ a day, or 3,700–6,200 ฿ a week including both airport transfers. A car just won't pay off at that pace. Grab is your option if:

Your hotel is by the beach and you head out once or twice a day — for dinner or a massage.
You don't hold a category "B" license, or didn't get an IDP before flying out.
You're in Phuket for a day or two: the minimum car rental term is 3 days, so a shorter one isn't possible.
You plan on tasting Thai beer: over 0.5‰ alcohol behind the wheel means a 5,000–20,000 ฿ fine or up to a year in jail.

When rental wins, hands down

With kids, on longer routes, and at three or more trips a day, a car is both cheaper and calmer. We fit a child seat for free — in a taxi, having one is always a gamble. A second driver also goes on the contract at no extra cost, so you can swap at the wheel.

Far-flung spots — the Samet Nangshe viewpoint at dawn, Mai Khao's plane-spotting beach, sunset at Promthep Cape — stop depending on driver availability or price haggling once you have a car. Mileage around Phuket is unlimited, and mainland trips to Phang Nga or Krabi are possible on request, with insurance still valid.

Honest downsides of renting: what we warn you about upfront

The two main downsides are parking in Patong and the unfamiliar right-hand drive. Plus a deductible from 3,000 ฿ for damage and a 5,000–10,000 ฿ deposit held for the rental term. We tell it straight, because our clients ask about this most often.

In Patong during high season, allow extra time to find a spot near the beach. A red-and-white curb means "no parking": parking there brings a fine of about 500 ฿, and the car can be towed.

Right-hand drive, left-hand traffic. It sounds scarier than it is: our clients say it takes 10–30 minutes to adjust, then it's automatic. Remember the key rule — yield to the left instead of the right, limits of 60 km/h in town and 90 km/h on the highway, and many junctions allow a left turn on red with a separate sign.

Count your trips. Fewer than two a day — take Grab and stay within 3,700–6,200 ฿ a week. More than two, or you have kids or long routes planned — go rental: about 10,000 ฿ for 7 days with fuel, and every extra trip costs nothing more.
