Bike or Car in Phuket: What to Choose — an Honest 7-Day Breakdown
A couple on a bike spends about 3,500 ฿ a week: renting a Honda PCX 160 ABS costs 2,800 ฿ plus roughly 700 ฿ in fuel. A family in a Toyota Yaris Ativ pays 7,315 ฿ for rental alone, fuel extra. But the third option is usually the smartest: a bike for the whole trip plus a car for 3 days for long drives — let's run the numbers.
Short answer: what's cheaper for 7 days?
A bike costs at least half as much. A couple on a Honda PCX 160 ABS spends about 3,500 ฿ a week: 2,800 ฿ rental (400 ฿ × 7 days) plus roughly 700 ฿ in fuel. A family in a Toyota Yaris Ativ pays 7,315 ฿ for rental alone — already with a 5% discount for 7+ days — fuel not included.
But "cheaper" isn't always "better." A car wins in the rain, with kids, and on long drives. So here's the spoiler: more and more of our MC BIKE clients rent a bike for the whole trip and add a car for 3 days for longer routes — we'll break that down below.
For reference: a family can easily spend 1,000–2,000 ฿ a day on taxis — 7,000–14,000 ฿ a week — with none of the freedom of your own ride. Almost any rental beats that.
How much is a bike for a week, for two?
About 3,500 ฿ including fuel, for a Honda PCX 160 ABS at 400 ฿/day. There's no 7-day discount — those start at 15+ days (−10%), so we count at full rate.
The scooter deposit is 3,000 ฿, refunded the day you return it. The price already includes two helmets, a phone holder, and servicing every 3,000 km — nothing extra to pay. Want it cheaper? The PCX 150, NMAX 155, and Aerox 155 run 300 ฿/day: a week comes to 2,100 ฿.
Our minimum bike rental is 5 days, so it fits a week's holiday perfectly. Fill up at chain stations — PTT, Shell, Bangchak, Caltex — where Gasohol 95 runs about 43 ฿/liter; save the roadside "bottle gas" for emergencies only.

- Fuel: about 100 ฿/day (real range 60–130 ฿) — another ~700 ฿ for the week.
- Total: ~3,500 ฿ for two, or 250 ฿ per person a day.
How much does a car cost for a family?
From 7,315 ฿ a week plus fuel. The Toyota Yaris Ativ costs 1,100 ฿/day: 7 days would be 7,700 ฿, but a 5% discount kicks in at 7+ days, bringing it to 7,315 ฿.
Fuel works on a "full-to-full" basis: you get the car with a full tank and return it full. Gasohol 95 runs about 43 ฿/liter, so the final cost depends only on your mileage — unlimited around Phuket.
The price includes full Class-1 insurance with a deductible from 3,000 ฿, a child seat, and a second driver — free. The deposit is 5,000–10,000 ฿ depending on the car class, refunded at drop-off.
When does a bike win?
On price, parking, and traffic. A week on a bike is about 3,500 ฿ versus 7,315 ฿ plus fuel for a car. In Patong and the Old Town, there's almost always a spot for a bike, and it slips through rush-hour traffic in minutes.
- Price: half a car's cost, before fuel.
- Parking: a bike fits right by beaches, cafés, and viewpoints where a car can't.
- Traffic: the narrow streets of Patong and Rawai cost a bike no time at all.
- Logistics: we deliver to your hotel for 300–500 ฿, to the airport for 500 ฿.
When is a car essential?
In the rainy season, with kids, and on long drives. From May to October, downpours last 20–40 minutes, and the road is slickest in the first 10 minutes as oil film rises — just background noise in a car, but real risk on a bike.
The math favors a car with kids too: for a bike, we only provide a child seat cushion up to age 6 (300 ฿ for the whole trip), while a car's child seat is free. Plus a trunk for the stroller and bags, and A/C in the midday heat.
Finally, insurance. Bikes in Thailand aren't insured: any damage is billed at the nearest service shop's rates, though only for parts actually damaged. A car comes with full Class-1 insurance — your risk is capped at a deductible from 3,000 ฿.
The "bike + car for 3 days" combo: how our clients save
6,100 ฿ for both rentals instead of 7,315 ฿ for just a car — and you keep the bike all 7 days. The math is simple: a PCX 160 ABS for a week (400 ฿ × 7 = 2,800 ฿) plus a Yaris Ativ for 3 days for longer trips (1,100 ฿ × 3 = 3,300 ฿).
Our minimum car rental is 3 days, so you can't grab one "for a day," but three days are easy to fill: Khao Lak, Krabi, Phang Nga Bay. Mainland trips need advance approval — insurance still covers you there.
A classic plan for your "car days": sunrise at Samet Nangshe viewpoint (about an hour from the island), a day in Khao Lak, a day in Krabi. With A/C, a trunk for water, and snacks, these routes are far easier than two hours on a bike on the highway.

License and documents needed?
Bike: category "A" license plus an IDP. Car: category "B" plus an IDP, age 21+, 1+ year of experience. A photo or copy doesn't count — you need the original for checks.
Russian drivers get their IDP via Gosuslugi and traffic police, for a 1,600 ₽ fee. Without the right IDP and category, insurers won't pay — even travel insurance can refuse. Don't forget your helmet: riding without one costs 500–2,000 ฿ per person.
