By Car from Phuket: Phang Nga, Krabi, Khao Lak in 1–3 Days
A rental car makes it easy to head three ways from Phuket: Phang Nga is 1.5 hours away, Khao Lak 1.5–2 hours, Krabi 2.5–3 hours. Mainland trips with MC BIKE cars are fine by prior arrangement, and Class 1 insurance still applies. Here's how to plan a 1–3 day trip.
Can You Drive a Rental Car from Phuket to the Mainland?
Yes. With MC BIKE cars, mainland trips to Phang Nga, Krabi, and Khao Lak are fine by prior arrangement, and full Class 1 insurance stays valid off the island. Just tell us your route when you book.
That's a key difference from bikes: we only rent two-wheelers for trips around Phuket island. A car, though, crosses the Sarasin Bridge without issue, keeping your mainland trip fully legal and insured.
The insurance excess starts at 3,000 ฿ and varies by car. Anything above the excess is covered by the insurer — unlike bikes, where the vehicle itself isn't insured at all.
Phang Nga and Samet Nangshe: Doable in a Day?
Easily, with time to spare: the Samet Nangshe viewpoint is about an hour's drive from the island, and roads within the province can take up to 1.5 hours one way. It's the closest of the three routes — a perfect first trip to the mainland.
Samet Nangshe is that postcard panorama of Phang Nga Bay, with limestone karsts rising out of the water. The classic move is arriving at dawn: soft light, few crowds, no heat. Our clients often leave in the dark and are back at the hotel in time for a late breakfast.
If dawn isn't your thing, the day still works out easily: about 3 hours of driving total, the rest spent on views, cafés, and piers where boats take you around the bay.
Khao Lak: What to See 1.5–2 Hours from Phuket?
Khao Lak is 1.5–2 hours away on a smooth road along the Andaman coast. It's a calm alternative to busy Phuket: long, quiet beaches, waterfalls in nearby national parks, and an unhurried resort pace.
A day trip works great here. Morning at an almost empty beach, a shaded walk to a waterfall at midday, lunch at a local café, and you're home by sunset. The boot makes it easy: towels, spare clothes, and water for the whole family travel with you instead of staying at the hotel.
The road is straightforward, with signs duplicated in English. The speed limit is 90 km/h outside towns and 60 km/h within them. Don't forget left-hand traffic — adjusting usually takes 10–30 minutes.
Krabi in 2.5–3 Hours: Day Trip or Overnight?
Krabi is 2.5–3 hours one way — so a day trip means 5–6 hours of driving. Doable, but tiring. We recommend staying overnight: the minimum car rental is 3 days anyway, so it won't add extra rental cost.
Here's a tried-and-tested two-day plan:
- Day 1: early start from Phuket, a stop at Phang Nga Bay along the way, Ao Nang beach after lunch, a sunset dinner, and an overnight stay in Krabi.
- Day 2: a morning walk around Krabi Town or a boat trip to nearby islands, then an unhurried drive back to Phuket after lunch, with stops along the way.
How Much Does the Trip Cost, and Where to Refuel?
Car rental at MC BIKE starts from 1,100 ฿/day for a Toyota Yaris Ativ, with a 3-day minimum. Gasohol 95 costs around 43 ฿ a litre, and PTT, Shell, Bangchak, and Caltex stations line all three routes — fuel is never a problem on the mainland.

For scale: a family using Grab easily spends 1,000–2,000 ฿ a day just getting around Phuket. A rental car pays for itself fast once you add trips to Krabi and Khao Lak.
Which Car Should You Choose for Mainland Routes?
A couple will be fine with the compact Toyota Yaris Ativ at 1,100 ฿/day; a family with kids will prefer the 7-seat Toyota Veloz at 1,800 ฿; and for longer routes with dirt-road viewpoints, take the 4WD Toyota Fortuner at 2,900 ฿/day.
We fit a child seat for free, and adding a second driver is free too — being able to swap on the drive to Krabi makes the day much easier. The refundable deposit is 5,000–10,000 ฿ depending on the car's class.
Car or Bike: Which One?
A car beats a bike in three cases: family with kids, rainy season, and lots of luggage. The child seat is free, the AC saves you from both downpours and heat, and suitcases and a stroller go in the boot, not on someone's lap.
There's a legal reason too. A car needs category "B" plus an IDP, age 21+, and a year of experience — most tourists qualify. A bike needs category "A", which many lack, and without it insurers won't pay.
Finally, bikes stay on Phuket, while cars can head to the mainland by arrangement. So Krabi and Khao Lak are themselves a case for four wheels. Details in our rental terms.
