Phuket by car in 1 day: lazy route
You can spend a day in Phuket without rush or crowds if you rent a car. Best pick: Toyota Yaris Ativ at 1000 ฿/day or MG 5 at 1200 ฿. The 60–80 km route covers top viewpoints, beaches and temples. Key: leave the hotel by 8 am to reach the first stop by 9, before the sun gets too hot.
Why take a car instead of a bike?
A car wins in Phuket when you don't want to depend on weather and plan 5–7 stops a day. Car rental starts at 1000 ฿/day (Toyota Yaris Ativ), a bike from 300 ฿. But by car you keep things in the trunk, don't sweat under a helmet and don't hunt for a place to stash a raincoat. For a family with a child or a couple with suitcases it's the obvious choice.
Also, a car shields you from sun and sudden rain, and tourist spots always have car parking (unlike bikes, which sometimes must be squeezed between cars). On a "lazy tourist" route where comfort and minimum effort matter, a car is worth it even for one day.
Which car to choose for a one-day trip?
A compact sedan is enough for a Phuket route: Toyota Yaris Ativ (1000 ฿/day, deposit 5000 ฿) or MG 5 (1200 ฿/day, deposit 5000 ฿). Both are economical (~6–7 l/100 km), easy to park in narrow sois and fit two suitcases. Four people? Look at Toyota Veloz (1700 ฿/day, deposit 7000 ฿) or Honda HR-V (1500 ฿/day, deposit 7000 ฿).
For higher and comfier rides there's Mazda CX-5 (1500 ฿/day, deposit 7000 ฿) and Toyota Cross 2025 (1700 ฿/day, deposit 7000 ฿). All MC BIKE cars are serviced every 3000 km and come with full first-class insurance. We don't take passports as deposit — only a cash deposit refunded after rental.
- Toyota Yaris Ativ — 1000 ฿/day, deposit 5000 ฿ (budget)
- MG 5 — 1200 ฿/day, deposit 5000 ฿ (a bit roomier)
- Honda HR-V — 1500 ฿/day, deposit 7000 ฿ (crossover)
- Toyota Veloz — 1700 ฿/day, deposit 7000 ฿ (7 seats)
- Mazda CX-5 — 1500 ฿/day, deposit 7000 ฿ (comfort and clearance)
One-day route: sunrise to sunset
Start in the south: leave the hotel at 7:30–8:00 to reach Big Buddha by 9:00. It's not hot yet and few tourists. Entry is free, car parking 50 ฿. From 45 m up you see Chalong Bay and the Andaman Sea. Allow 40 minutes.
Next: Karon Viewpoint, 15 minutes from Big Buddha on a scenic road. Free parking. Then descend to Kata Noi beach — compact and cozy. On the way stop at Windmill Viewpoint between Nai Harn and Yanui. It's often windy, but the bay view is beautiful.
After lunch drive north to Bang Tao beach or the Laguna area. On the way stop at the Surin beach viewpoint. Return to the hotel by 16:00 to avoid driving in the dark: some stretches are poorly lit, and left-hand traffic takes getting used to.
- 8:00 — leave the hotel
- 9:00 — Big Buddha (parking 50 ฿, free entry)
- 10:30 — Karon Viewpoint (free)
- 11:30 — Kata Noi beach (roadside parking)
- 13:00 — lunch at a local cafe (avg 150–250 ฿)
- 14:30 — Windmill Viewpoint (free)
- 16:00 — Bang Tao beach or Laguna
- 18:00 — back to the hotel
Where to park and how much it costs?
In Phuket parking at tourist spots is mostly free, but popular places may ask 20–50 ฿. Big Buddha — 50 ฿; Kata and Karon beaches — free along the road, but watch signs: some spots ban stopping. In malls (Central Floresta, Jungceylon) parking is free with a 500 ฿+ purchase, otherwise 20–40 ฿/hour.
The fine for wrong parking in Phuket is 500 ฿. If towed, you pay another 1000 ฿ for towing plus 500 ฿ fine. So always park in allowed spots and don't leave the car on shoulders with yellow markings.
Is it safe to drive in Phuket?
Yes, if you follow the rules and don't drink and drive. Traffic is left-hand, roads are generally good, but mountain roads have sharp turns. The main danger is motorcyclists who often maneuver without warning. Keep distance and watch your mirrors.
To rent a car you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) or Thai license. Russian licenses without an IDP are not valid. Fine for driving without a license is up to 1000 ฿. Full first-class insurance is included with MC BIKE, but it doesn't cover damage if you were drunk or broke the rules. More on insurance in /articles/strahovka-baika-i-avto.
Top 5 places to include in the route
1. Big Buddha — a huge white marble statue visible from many spots on the island. Free entry, open until 18:30. 2. Karon Viewpoint — classic view of three beaches: Kata Noi, Kata and Karon. 3. Kata Noi beach — quiet and clean, with crystal water. 4. Windmill Viewpoint — between Nai Harn and Yanui, with a panorama of the Andaman Sea. 5. Bang Tao beach — a long sandy beach with good infrastructure and parking.
If time remains, visit Wat Chalong — open until 17:00, free entry. It's the most revered temple on the island. On the way back, dine at a fish restaurant in Rawai — fresh seafood from 200 ฿ per dish.
How much money do you need for a day?
One-day car budget: Toyota Yaris Ativ rental — 1000 ฿ (but remember, minimum car rental is 3 days, so 1 day isn't worth it; better take 3 days and pay 3000 ฿). Fuel: 60–80 km at 7 l/100 km — about 5–6 liters, i.e. 215–260 ฿ (at 43 ฿/l). Parking — up to 100 ฿. Lunch — 200–300 ฿ per person. Total for two excluding rental: about 1000–1500 ฿.
Rent for 3 days and the daily rate stays the same, but you can explore without rush. 7-day car rental gets 5% off, 30 days — 15%. Bike discounts differ: 15+ days — 10%, 30+ days — 20%. More on bike prices in /articles/skolko-stoit-arenda-baika-2026.
What else to know before the trip?
Refuel at major stations (PTT, Shell, Bangchak) — quality fuel and shops. Avoid roadside bottle-fuel stalls: there may be sediment. Washing the car before return isn't required, but if very dirty, better wash it (150–200 ฿) to avoid disputes.
In the rainy season (May–October) roads can be slippery and visibility drops. Turn on headlights and slow down. If in an accident, call the rental and the insurer. Guide in /articles/dtp-chto-delat. Renting a car at MC BIKE gives you full first-class insurance and 24/7 support. Hotel delivery — 300–500 ฿, often free for 3+ day rentals (ask when booking).
